Why This is Important to Me

While unemployed and without health insurance, my sister found a lump in her breast. We knew we couldn't ignore it, but we also couldn't afford to pay for whatever it may turn out to be. But thanks to the Susan G Komen foundation, she was able to have a mammogram and biopsy at no charge to us. It turned out to be a very agressive form of breast cancer. Luckily for us, she qualified for state help, which has paid for her surgery and subsequent treatments. She was able to keep both breasts, and the cancer was removed via lumpectomy, with clear margins. The lymph node was removed and was clear, so we'd caught it in time. She'll be finished with Chemotherapy on January 15th, and finished with Radiation Therapy by the first part of March, so her hair should grow back in time for Spring!

I wanted to participate in this fundraiser as a way to pay back everything good that has helped us get through these times. No one should face breast cancer alone. Thanks to the Breast Cancer Network of Strength, no woman has to. Our funds will benefit Breast Cancer Network of Strength, an organization that provides immediate emotional relief to anyone affected by breast cancer.

Network of Strength offers outreach programs, breast health awareness workshops, wigs and prostheses for women with limited resources, and advocacy on policies related to breast cancer. Their YourShoes™ 24/7 Breast Cancer Support Center is the country’s only toll-free breast cancer hotline staffed entirely by trained peer counselors who are breast cancer survivors.

I hope you will make a contribution to my campaign in support of this outstanding organization.
